One way to soften skin in a portrait is to use Photoshop Lightroom or Photoshop’s Camera Raw. First, open the file in Camera Raw (.crw files will open with a double-click; to open a file of another format, right-click the file in Adobe Bridge and then choose Open With from the contextual menu that appears).
In the “Detail” tab, increase the Luminance slider and decrease the Luminance Detail slider. Small changes can soften skin, while large changes can make your image look like a painting.
