“QuarkXPress 8 Essential Training” Now Available at Lynda.com
If you’re looking for a comprehensive video training on how to use all the features of QuarkXPress 8 — yes, all of them — look no further than, well, me.
A little while ago, I took on the herculean task of explaining how every feature in QuarkXPress 8 works. With examples. And files to go along with the examples. The result is an 8-hour hands-on tour, available at Lynda.com.
Below is their description. If you’re new to QuarkXPress, or if you want to understand the new features in versions 7 and 8, I hope you’ll have a look. The online training is available now, and the DVD will be released soon.
You can even watch 10 of the first movies for free!

I have Quark Xpress 7 but never used Quark before. Will this tutorial help me as well?? or only helpful for QuarkXpress 8 users??
Osman: I would recommend upgrading to QuarkXPress 8. It’s a LOT easier (and more fun) to use than version 7. Seriously. And it costs just $299 or less to upgrade. My video covers everything in version 8, and Quark moved some things around since version 7. So, I wouldn’t recommend my video for version 7. (Eek! Did I just say that?)
Hi Jay,
I’ve just come across your site. Looks nice!
I’ve upgraded to v8 but I can’t find a word count for the document. I’m sure I could do this in v7 via the Spell Check routine I think. In v8 I can only find a menu item to count the number of words in a text box. I’ve posted this on the Quark Forum and been told to use an AppleScript to do the word count! SURELY there’s a better way than this.
So.. 2 questions:
1. How can I do a document word count?
2. Where is the best place to get tech support about Xpress 8 for Mac?
Thanks!
Chris
Chris: first, thanks! As for spell checking, I looked at the spell checker in v7 and v8, but didn’t see an option for word count for the entire document (or Layout). I checked with The PowerXChange, and they pointed me to VTools, by Vision’s Edge. Here’s the link:
http://www.thepowerxchange.com/vtools_6730_prd1.html#reso
However, I’m not seeing an option there for counting all the words in a Layout either. I’ve emailed The PowerXChange about it and am awaiting a reply.
As for tech support, Quark offers free support by phone, live chat (my favorite), or email. They also have online Forums. Here’s what I wrote in a previous story:
————————
If you’re in North America and call technical support (800-676-4575, option two), you now connect directly with Quark’s Denver team Monday through Friday between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Mountain Time. After-hours support is available through the same number and is provided by Quark’s technical support team in India.
(The Denver technical support center joins their two others, in Chandigarh, India and Neuchatel, Switzerland.)
In addition, Quark now has live online support for Quark desktop products, where you can chat with a technical expert to resolve issues in real-time. Accessible at http://www.quark.com/service/desktop/support, live chat help is available between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. US Mountain Time.

I hope this helps!
OK, word from the developer is that it only counts words in a Story (a linked chain of text boxes). Still looking for a Layout-wide word count option…
Greetings! Very useful advice within this article! It’s the little changes that produce the greatest changes.
Many thanks for sharing!
