Auto Save Causes File Bloat
If your QuarkXPress 7 files are growing in size at a rapid rate, check to see if Auto Save is enabled.
If so, disable it. Quark is working on a fix.
Jay Nelson is the editorial director of PlanetQuark.com, and the editor and publisher of Design Tools Monthly. He’s also the author of the QuarkXPress 8 and QuarkXPress 7 training titles at Lynda.com, as well as the training videos Quark includes in the box with QuarkXPress 7 . In addition, Jay writes regularly for Macworld and Photoshop User magazines and speaks at industry events.
Does this happen with every version, or just the latest 7.3.1?
I’m not sure. Is there a reason to not use the latest version? Everyone I know is using 7.3.1.
I know quite a few people still using Quark 6, and I was curious to see if it would cause them problems as well.
When I use AutoSave (with 6.5) on a networked server, the server’s antivirus software will occasionally “lock” the A$V file, and thus prevent the main Quark file from being opened.
Anyone else have this problem, and able to get around it?
Fritz: the bug is in version 7.3.1. I’m not sure about previous versions.
I just upgraded recently to 7.3.1 and am having to append every NEW file created in 7.3.1, not just ones created in earlier versions of quark opened in 7.3.1, to reduce the huge file sizes. Hope there is a fix soon if the newest problem is autosave, as this is way too time consuming to do on every file and I really want to keep autosave on.
J3: Yep, Quark says Auto Save is the cause. For now you’ll either have to live with huge files or turn of Auto Save. How’s that for a rock and a hard place?
Bummer, but thanks. I have another issue with 7.3.1 also: I really hate “runaround” and in general quark preferences (no documents open), no matter how many times I go to Preferences >Default Print Layout (and Default Web Layout) > Tools, and then click on every single picture and text box individually, and click ok after modifying the runaround to “none”, the boxes in the next document I open still have runaround at least 50% of the time. The preference changes don’t seem to be taking hold, even if I close out of preferences and then reopen general preferences immediately. What’s going on? Am I doing something wrong – do I need to click on something besides “ok” to keep the box preferences as I set them?

I rounded up all the problems I could find in QuarkXPress 6.5 and listed them at http://planetquark.com/2008/10/30/will-quarkxpress-65-run-on-mac-os-x-105-leopard/. There’s an item in there about file corruption on file servers, but nothing about bloat in 6.5.
I have Quark Express 4.1 in my workplace. My problem is sometimes while working on Quark(Pagination Department), the system freezes and when the system recovers(either automatically after a long wait or after a restart), Major portions of the edited pages are wiped clean. Worse even the previous revisions too suffers the same. Can someone tell me a Way out. Any help would be highly appreciated.
Thank you.
Wow, that’s nasty! Unless someone wanders by this eight-month-old post, you’re not likely to get help here. Have you tried calling Quark for free? I’m not sure that they support nine-year-old software, but it’s worth a try…
Also, Quark’s online user-to-user forums may yield you a response.
i want to open a quark 8 file in indesign but it only supports quark 4.1 files. how do I convert a quark 8 file in quark 4.1. I do have quark 8 but I’m used to indesign and i think its a lot better
thanks in advance
Each version of QuarkXPress (or InDesign, for that matter) can save down one version number. So, you’ll need to export from QXP 8 to 7, open in 7, export to 6, then repeat in 6 and 5. Not pretty.
Otherwise, you can buy this:
As I say in the story, the conversion isn’t perfect, but it may be good enough for what you’re doing.
It looks like my URL didn’t come through in the message above, so I’ll try again:

This issue stands fixed in QXP 7.4 onwards…
Arminder: that’s GREAT to know! This means that anyone using 7.4 or above have no reason to be concerned with this issue. Thanks for chiming in.
I have this issue and I lay out newsletters for several trade associations. How does one go about downloading 7.4? I can’t find it on the Quark website.
Answering my own question, but perhaps this will help somebody else. I contacted Quark and they wrote back.
