Discretionary hyphens remain invisible until a word needs to split at the end of a line.
The discretionary hyphen tells QuarkXPress where you prefer to split the word.
You can insert discretionary hyphens between characters using the keyboard shortcut Command+hyphen (Mac OS) or Ctrl+hyphen (Windows).
