PDF2DTP for QuarkXPress 9, QuarkXPress XTension, Released by Markzware

July 2, 2012 — SANTA ANA, California — Markzware, a proven, leading publisher of data conversion, preflight and search technologies for QuarkXPress®, Adobe® InDesign® and Microsoft Publisher announces the release of PDF2DTP for QuarkXPress 9.

PDF2DTP is an XTension module for QuarkXPress that enables you to open and convert PDF documents within QuarkXPress 9 and supports both Macintosh and Windows platforms.

Glenn McDowall, pre-press for Midway Colour Print said, “I have been wanting this sort of functionality in QuarkXPress for many years. Many times, I’m asked to make extensive edits to PDFs and no one has the original DTP files, and it’s often a clumsy process – placing the original PDF multiple times into QuarkXPress produces PDFs where everything is duplicated – it will be good to have another option.”

PDF2DTP provides a quick, easy and affordable method for you to migrate content from PDF into an editable format within QuarkXPress. Once in QuarkXPress, users are now in a flexible and familiar environment, allowing for much easier editing. PDF2DTP for QuarkXPress 9 will convert that entire, flattened PDF right back into QuarkXPress, a desktop publishing (DTP) layout.

PDF2DTP converts all elements that are possible to bring over from the PDF, including text, colors, and images. It will also extract the images embedded within most PDFs and saves them in a separate folder.

Paul Ramos, publishing professional, Difusao Cultural said, “PDF2DTP is fantastic!! I tried it on a PDF for a book that had 524 pages, and it took less than 5 minutes to make the total conversion. It even isolated the images in separate files.”

The PDF data conversion is enabled with a single click by selecting PDF2DTP -> Convert PDF from the QuarkXPress Utilities menu. No longer re-create documents from scratch or convert just one page at a time. PDF2DTP gives you a big head-start in converting your PDF to QuarkXPress 9.

“Markzware does not need any further recommendations. They’ve created another wise tool for wise users,” Jianu Marian production manager at Ecologic Group SRL.

System Requirements, Pricing and Availability:
PDF2DTP for QuarkXPress 9 is available immediately at the PDF2DTP Store for $199. You can obtain the system requirements for Macintosh and Windows platforms, as well as purchase through thePDF2DTP Product page.

Have you or any of your associates tried to use the new PDF2DTP as part of any localization/translation project workflow from PDF to QuarkXPress (8 or 9) to tagged text with CopyFlow Gold to translation with CAT tool (SDL Trados TagEditor) and then back to QuarkXPress (with the help of CopyFlow Gold) to PDF? I would really love to have practical reference to the ability of PDF2DTP to process all texts in PDF files in accurate way before making the purchase. If PDF2DTP would not be able to extract the sentences and text blocks according to their actual content and leaves in all line/paragraph breaks in the middle of sentences (as they appear in PDFs), then the benefit factor of PDF2DTP could be fairly limited. Any comments or feedback on the matter would be highly appreciated.

Ove: I would contact Markzware and ask them about it. They’re really nice (and helpful) folks, and may offer to perform a test for you.

  3. Jason Merca Says:

Our company purchased a PDF2DTP from Markzware and we were worried it wouldn’t translate well or at least up to our expectations. We sent an e-mail to ask for a demo, but Markzware does not provide demos on their conversion tools.

Never the less, they were willing to test convert one of our files and showed us how it looked. It was amazingly on point, I tell you.

So we went ahead and purchased the software and it’s been doing us great ever since. Highly recommend Markzware!

Thanks for the good advice. I contacted Markzware and just as you said, they were very helpful by offering test conversion of one of my typical PDF files into Quark8. Unfortunately the result they delivered did not meet our expectations at all. My main concern of wether the SW will be able to detect sentences without linebreaks or softbreaks in the line ends of PDF file was unfortunately fully justified – majority of texts in Quark frames were sliced into parts line-by-line and not sentence-by-sentence. And more complex layout was also not really looking the same as in the original PDF. All in all this unfortunately means that we would not be able to use the conversion result neither for exporting texts for Computer-Aided-Translation software for localization nor for recreating the material into localized PDF without extensive editing in Quark. I already had my hopes rather high for a moment. I hope it was not just the matter of some settings gone wrong or something, as there still are some positive reviews and feedback for PDF2DTP in the web…
