As in other programs, QuarkXPress lets you create layers and assign items to them. The easiest way to work with layers is to Control-click a layer name on the Layers palette to invoke its contextual menu.

There, you can choose to Show, Hide, Lock, Delete or Edit layers. This option is particularly handy: Select Items on Layer.
