This tip is for Photoshop, but it’s something we do every day to prepare images for QuarkXPress:
When closely cropping images in Photoshop, it’s easy to nick the edge of drop shadows and other faintly colored pixels. Next time, choose Image> Trim. In the resulting dialog, determine which pixels to trim off — either transparent pixels or the color at the top left or bottom right of the document — and press OK.

Photoshop does the tight cropping for you.
